Presentation of new prestigious Trophy
Today the top athletes competing in the second leg of the Longines Global Champions Tour will arrive in Antwerp at the stunning new venue at Cockerill Quay overlooking the River De Schelde.
LGCT Antwerp will have an additional prize for the best rider in all CSI5* competitions. Antwerp is renowned for being the diamond capital of the world and the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC) has a tradition of designing a special sculpture for elite sporting events that take place in the city and the surrounding area. Previously sculptures have been created for the European Hockey Championships and the Antwerp Diamond Games international tennis.
The AWDC has identified the Longines Global Champions Tour of Antwerp as belonging to this selective group of events and has provided a new trophy, in the shape of a stirrup, which has been designed by diamond merchant Willy Henneuse.
The winner of the trophy will be the rider with the most points from all LGCT CSI5* classes from Thursday to the end of the show on Saturday. The points system awards 56 points to the winner, 54 to the runner-up, 53 for third place, etc. Classes 3 and 4 will have a coefficient of 1.5 and class 6, the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix, will have a coefficient of 2.
Tomorrow there are two LGCT CSI 5* classes on the programme. At 4.25pm the LGCT 1.45m presented by Topsport Vlaanderen, followed by the LGCT 1.50m presented by CMB & Exmar, which was won last year by France’s Penelope Leprevost, silver medallist at the 2015 World Cup Final in Las Vegas last weekend.
