International riders and horses are well-travelled personalities. Because almost every weekend and so on almost 365 days a year, equestrian sports events are taking place worldwide. From April till October the majority of the events are carried out in the so-called ‘green season’. But in the winter months too, the equestrian sports circus continues its journey. Be it Kentucky or London, Paris, Geneva, Los Angeles, Salzburg or the GLOCK HORSE PERFORMANCE CENTER in Treffen: the world’s best athletes and their four-legged partners do travel a lot. But what makes an indoor event something special and what is the difference between indoor events and their outdoor counterparts?
Smaller spaces – bigger challenges?
Whilst in the outdoor tournaments, horses are able to gallop over large surfaces in generous arenas, they have to get used to a somewhat different scale for the indoor season. The space is smaller, the audience closer and the atmosphere completely different. For some of the horses, this is sometimes not so easy and requires a lot of sensitivity from the riders. Also the individual shapes of the indoor arenas – from almost circular to elliptical, rectangular or square – require a certain degree of flexibility from both riders and horses. Young and inexperienced horses in particular allow themselves to be distracted by various features in the arenas. But this is exactly what they need in order to gain experience.
On the other hand, some horses love the indoor atmosphere. GLOCK’s Zaranza for instance. “Zaranza loves the atmosphere in indoor events. You can really feel it”, says twice World and European champion Gerco Schroeder, describing the 12-year-old KWPN stallion.
Perfect conditions at the GLOCK HORSE PERFORMANCE CENTRE
The ground consists of a sand-fleece mixture, guaranteeing to offer sufficient grip for the horses and pleasant cushioning before and after jumps. The warm-up area is directly adjacent to the arena and the audience will be able to watch all activities in both halls from the heated grandstands.
