Deutsches Spring- und Dressur-Derby
A Dutchman Conquers the Derby Park
Hamburg – Preliminary results fell on the second day of the German Jumping and Dressage Derby, presented by Tchibo: The starting field for the 83rd edition of the classic jumping event was sorted in a sporting manner. The Dutch rider Michael Greeve, who is relatively unknown in Hamburg, created a real “bang” when he won the DKB Prize with Exclusive and also finished third with Uncle Berry.
Greeve works for the former Dutch Nations’ Cup rider Johan Heins who was the European Show Jumping Champion in 1977. “Exclusive is a very fast horse and is also very good in speed competitions”, said the winner who was very happy with his performance in the spectator rimmed arena. “Uncle Berry is also quite fast but has more power”. The 29 year old rider must decide which horse he will ride in the difficult German Jumping Derby by 6 p.m. Saturday evening. Second place went to the British rider Guy Williams and his proven partner Skip Tow Ramiro, who have already experienced success in Hamburg. The best German rider was the 2009 Derby winner Thomas Kleis with Carassina. Kleis also took the eighth place with his second horse – Quick Vainquer. “I think I’ll ride Carassina on Sunday afternoon because she simply has more experience”.
The defending champions, Andre Thieme (GER) with Nacorde, and the second place finishers from last year, Torben Köhlbrandt (GER) with C-Trenton Z, easily qualified for the Derby. The grey stallion had all eyes on him as he hesitated at the top of the bank, like he did four years ago, but then descended the Tchibo wall perfectly. “That’s when the stress is a bit more…” said Köhlbrandt. Marcus Ehning (GER) produced a remarkable round with the nine year old Hanoverian stallion Cambel for 14th place and the American rider Richard Spooner finished in 11th place with Apache.
