A few weeks ago the first OPU-foal was born in Belgium. OPU stands for ovum pick up. Behind this acronym hides a special form of artificial insemination.
Mother of the little colt the mare Jura van Sint-Maarten, which made already talk through the birth of the stallion Thunder van de Zuuthoeven of itself. Due to a uterine infection and scarring thereby incurred the mare was barren and an embryo transfer was also not possible.
As part of the new process a mature egg has taken from Jura and implanted a surrogate mother. This surrogate mother has now successfully discharged the foal. In the past there has been several attempts by this method, but it´s the first time a foal is born.
