Pius Schwizer Talks About Money, Clones and Career
Swiss online newspaper watson.ch published an interview with Pius Schwizer (published on January 22, 2014) who recently won the Longines World Cup in Zurich (EQWO.net Report), about horse trading, investors, Qataris and cloning. His answers are worth reading.

World class rider and horse trader Pius Schwizer is rather skeptical about the million dollar deals mainly done by Qataris. At the same time he has to admit that he is also one of those taking advantage of the higher prices. “Money does not matter there [Note: Qatar, Saudi Arabia]. If they really want a horse, they bid incredibly high amounts such that the owner is forced to sell. We “Ordinary Mortals” cannot keep up with these amounts. Sure, we benefit from the rich Sheiks and investors, too. Their money goes into own pockets partly. Nonetheless, I remain skeptical about Qatar’s influence….”
He talks frankly about the loss of his top horse Toulago: “It is right, last year I had to cope with some drawbacks. I am lucky enough to be able to quickly adjust to new horses. I can hardly feel the loss. Still: what happened to me, that the horse was literally taken from me while I was sitting in his saddle, is without any further comments.”
The rider is not a big fan of cloning: “First of all, it is very expensive and second, I have not yet heard of any cloned horse that made it to the top. That would simply not work. Where should that lead to? Will I compete against a cloned horse with a cloned Pius Schwizer in the future? That is perverse.”
