Press release – Bertram Allen winning today’s Big Class here at the Sunshine Tour, really confirmed the quality of the Irish riders that are here competing, especially following so closely after Dermott Lennon’s win yesterday.
Betram won two classes today, the Big Tour D class riding Dino W and in the 1.45cm class, riding High Valley, with whom he also won last week’s Small GP. Along with Betram’s successes in other classes here at the Tour, it is clear he has a stable full of great horses for this season.
There were 15 horses through to the jump off in the Big GP today, the winning time was a very fast 38.03 sec and was almost half a second faster than the Belgium rider Ugo Berritella, who rode Cavaluna Z into second place with 38.38 sec but just couldn’t catch Dino W’s time. The Dutch rider Eric Van der Vleuten riding Zigali P S took third position with a time of 40.45 sec. Italian Luca Moneta with Herold and German rider Michael Viehweg with Lord of Pezi completed the podium in this exciting FEI Longines Ranking class.
High Valley won the Big Tour C, in an amazing time of 32.06 sec, three seconds faster than Daisy du Grand Moustie ridden by the Chilean rider Bernardo Naveillán. The British rider Lance Whitehouse with Dior V Overis Z, Brazilian rider Pedro Veniss with Cheindira and the Belgian rider Jos Verlooy with Gaston Van’T Steentje completed the prize winners in this class.
Lance Whitehouse took also took first place in the 1.40m Big Tour B class, riding Cartino III. Matthew Sampson from the UK was second with Perfect Rouge and Irish rider Greg Broderick with Daify, third. Joe Whitaker (UK) riding Lavarno was fourth and Francisco Arango from Spain rising Camblin Arzonain, fifth.
In the Big Tour A2, Bernardo Naveillán this time took the win riding Tenor D’Elle and beating the French rider Regis Bouguennec with Vitale de St Ladre into second place. Spanish rider Antonio Mariñas riding Fleur, Belgian rider Virginie Thonon with Danaide du Houssoit and Spanish rider, Alberto Márquez with Croupier V, took the rest of the placings.
In the 1.30m, Big Tour A1, there was almost an ‘all British’ podium with Harriet Nuttall and Highland Cruiser II taking the win. Jordan Thompson riding Eclips, Alison Barton riding Billy Anna, Mark Armstrong riding Daniella and German rider Holger Wenz with Quite Flower took the rest of the placings.
In the 1.40m, Medium Tour, held on grass in the David Broome arena; Kayleigh Watts from the UK and her very fast horse Winde were once again impossible to beat. In the second phase of the class her time of 28.28 sec was untouchable although her compatriot Chloe Winchester riding Sheyenne 27 also flew round in a time of 29.69 sec. As there were 110 entries in this class the prizes were doubled and both riders took home a first place rosette. Derek McCoppin with Zaire and Borja Bidón with Quick de Glanville took the two, second places and Taiwanese rider Isheau Wong with Zadarijke V and Pedro Mateos, from Spain, with Una D’Helby both took third.
Prizes were also doubled in the Medium Tour B. In first were the Belgian rider Stephanie Andries with Javena, and the French rider Alice Jonqueres with G and C Tropigold. In second were Swedish rider Jennifer Jonsson with Qlara, and Spaniard, Ricardo Jurado with Picotazo. Swedish rider Henrik Lanner with Cardora, and French rider Isabelle Teisserenc with Traviata des Hayettes took third.
Emily Turkington from Ireland riding Lissangle Luxzavella won a fast Medium Tour A class today. Second place was taken by was Nuno Gomes (Portugal) with Pantaro and in third was Kayleigh Watts this time riding Escudo. The second Portuguese rider on the podium was Antonio Frutuoso riding Chassana who took fourth place, and the French rider Lara Postillón with Woman was fifth.
The Small Tour was a very fast class and hotly contested today with Moroccan rider Mohamed Al Ahrach riding Africa Capital Quanthar taking the top spot. Sheik Samir Mirdad with Mirdads Nayyarat was second and the British rider, Annabel Lomas with Vraiecocotte Berence, third.
Competition carries on tomorrow with a busy day of jumping at all levels. The highlight of the day is the Small GP an FEI ranking class with 24,600 euros in prizes. The total prize money during this International four star event is a 204,500 euros.
