Their team philosophy provides a cohesive treatment plan from initial diagnosis, selection of the best treatment options and the development of rehabilitation protocols. Anne Moretta VMD MS has over 30 years of diversified experience in equine sports medicine. She specializes in incorporating advanced equine acupuncture, internal medicine and biomechanical lameness evaluations into her sports medicine practice. Her primary interests are in diagnosis and treatment of complex biomechanical, musculoskeletal and lameness issues, poor performance problems and the use of acupuncture and alternate modalities for pain relief. She provides in-depth lameness work-ups, imaging, pre-purchase exams and has a special interest in metabolic and other medical conditions that can affect your horse’s performance. Dr. Moretta is a past president of the Florida Association of Equine Practitioners.
Dr. Moretta is internationally trained in advanced equine acupuncture and uses a complementary approach to maintain your horse’s comfort and soundness. She enhances her traditional veterinary practice with an Eastern approach especially when conventional treatment and medicines are not effective. She finds that both approaches complement each other. Dr. Moretta’s training in Eastern medicine gives her a unique feel for and a different perspective on the individual.
Dr. Moretta’s background as a professional hunter/jumper rider and owner, trainer and breeder of Hanoverians and sport horses broadens her perspective on many aspects of sport horse issues. She travels internationally as a consultant on various aspects of equine sports medicine.
Suzan Oakley, DVM, Diplomate ABVP (Equine), is a certified member of The International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP), an international organization that focuses on imaging, biomechanics and lameness in the equine athlete. Her focus is on lameness and advanced imaging in performance horses and she performs specialist-level ultrasound exams to aid in the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries.
She is available for imaging consultations and pre purchase exams.
Dr. Oakley has lectured nationally and internationally on equine musculoskeletal anatomy and ultrasound and shares her advanced proficiency in musculoskeletal ultrasound as an instructor at veterinary ultrasound courses, including ISELP. She is also a courtesy adjunct professor in the Practice Based Equine Clerkship at the University of Florida. Dr. Oakley is also a past president of the Florida Association of Equine Practitioners.
A classical dressage rider, Dr. Oakley is particularly interested in the use of basic dressage exercises as part of physical therapy and rehabilitation protocols. Dr. Oakley employs rehabilitation protocols and modalities into practice such as Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES), to maintain soundness and increase the horse’s comfort and performance.
Sheila Schils, Ph.D., is an innovator in the field of equine rehabilitation and developed the use of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) in horses for injury rehabilitation and prevention. Dr. Schils was a professor at the University of Wisconsin where she taught courses on biomechanics and kinesiology. She uses the science of physical therapy to develop specific exercises, both in hand and under saddle, to aid in the rehabilitation process. Schils also competes in dressage at the FEI level.
Injury rehabilitation is her main goal along with injury prevention.
Dr. Schils’ background in research and education is coupled with many years of riding and training horses and riders. Her expertise in the field of physical therapy is supported by her practical experience working with horses and riders on a day-to-day basis. To develop her riding skills, she has worked with leading trainers, including a year spent in Sweden riding for Eric Lette, the International FEI Chair of Dressage. An FEI dressage rider, Dr. Schils feels it is essential for the practitioner to understand the details of the sport from a rider’s perspective, especially when setting up a physical therapy retraining protocol.
