The Colorado Horse Park (CHP) Summer in the Rockies IV began on Wednesday with a difficult $2,500 1.40-1.45m Open Jumper class, sponsored by Adequan®, in the Coors Family Grand Prix Ring. Seven riders contested the course, designed by Marina Azevedo, and only Armando Hassey, piloting his own Cassino, was able to lay down a clear round within the tight time allowed of 71 seconds. Competition continues through Sunday, July 5.
Hassey went last in the order, and before he took the course, there were just two riders tied with three time faults. Second place was awarded to Natascha Gates piloting her own mount, Quickie, with a time of 73.589 seconds. Third place went to Katharin Gualtieri aboard Sandwillow Farm’s Castalano in 73.96 seconds.
Hassey, of Mexico, took victory aboard Cassino, his very own up and coming eight-year-old Holsteiner gelding.
“I bought [Cassino] at an auction when he was only six months old,” Hassey explained. “I have trained him ever since.”
“[In my second ride aboard Cassino], I didn’t leave any room for the time allowed – I didn’t expect that with the first horse, [Sauveur De B’Neville owned by MHJ Sales, LLC], because he is one year further along,”Hassey detailed. “He has more experience, but we took an unfortunate rail.”
Hassey plans to compete Sauveur De B’Neville again tomorrow in the $20,000 Open Welcome Stake Class and Cassino again later this week.
“I would like to thank my team. All of us riders know we would not be anything without our grooms, our trainers, our families and our supporters,” said Hassey.
Competition at the Colorado Horse Park in Parker, Colorado, continues tomorrow, July 2nd. Highlights will include a $20,000 Open Welcome Stake and the High Performance Working Hunter division.
