Focus on Cutting – An Interview with Multiple AMERICANA Champion Denis Pini

Europe’s premier western event with its 50,000 visitors offers the ideal platform for presenting Cutting and Cowhorse to a larger audience and attracting new fans to these great disciplines. In 2017, AMERICANA (Augsburg, September 3 until 10, 2017, for visitors: September 6 until 10) will once more highlight cutting both for riders and visitors.

There will be a variety of attractive classes for competitors: besides the NCHA and Masters Cutting classes there will be a Youth as well as a Grassroot Cutting. The latter attracted lots of attention last time. The $10,800-added Cutting Open final will be the highlight of the Saturday evening show and offer the riders the chance of presenting themselves in front of 5,000 visitors.

Among the top riders looking forward to AMERICANA 2017, there is the Italian professional Denis Pini. Denis rode at AMERICANA for the first time in 2006 and won the 2011 AMERICANA Masters Cutting Trophy aboard Red Freckles Quixote (owned by Davide Tresoldi) as well as the AMERICANA European Cutting Championship twice: in 2013 aboard 6-year- old Playlite (by CD Light) for owner Davide Tresoldi and in 2015 aboard the 7-year- old stallion All About Pep (by Sweet Little Pepto) for owner Dirk Fransen.

“AMERICANA is something special,” says Denis Pini. “It is a well organized event at a comfortable location with great timing. I am looking forward to the 2017 edition! I do not know which horses we will bring. At this time, for any professional trainer it’s a million dollars question, the choice would be premature for being allowed only two horses to show. I think and hope in any case that one of them will be again All About Pep, who won the last edition.”

At the end of 2016, Denis Pini‘s NCHA show records were almost $113,000. He got acquainted with cutting when he was 13 years old. In 2000, Denis moved to open class and started working as a trainer with Carlo Volpi where he learnt the basics of cutting. Then, he started travelling in Texas, riding with several American trainers. With these, he also organized many clinics in Italy. Denis Pini is an AA NCHA judge who judged in several European countries. His clients are not only from Italy, but also from other European countries and not just horse owners themselves but mostly Non Pro and Amateur riders. At the moment, he trains 25 to 30 cutting horses in the Equestrian center & Le Colombare Quarter Horse in Asola, close to Mantova, just 20 minutes away from Lake Garda.
