JS – Everyone who cares a little bit about show jumping in Ireland was anxious to find out, which of their nation’s riders would get the only individual spot for the Olympic Games in Rio 2016 after the team did not make the qualification in Aachen 2015. 20-year old Bertram Allen secured said spot for his nation, but not for himself.
However, everyone expected Bertram and his reliable mare Molly Malone V to be the first choice since he is currently ranked as number ten in the world and is therefore by far the best Irish show jumping rider. But Ireland’s Chef d’Equipe Robert Splaine did not pick Bertram. Neither did he go for the other two contestants Cian O’Connor (Nr. 58 in the world with Good Luck) and Denis Lynch (Nr. 32 in the World with All Star).
Instead, he nominated Greg Broderick, because he and his mount MHS Going Global “are a combination at the very top of their form.”.
